Ephron replied to Avraham saying “my lord, listen to me; a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is it between you and me? Bury your dead.” After paying for the land, Avraham buried Sarah in what we now know to be “Maraat Hamachpelah.”
It would be almost hilarious if not so absurd that just seven months ago, Hebron was in essence, blasted from Jewish history by the United Nations. Yep, the very same Hebron that both the Torah and Quran explicitly state was purchased by Avraham. At this moment, I would like to take a quote the UNESCO’s 199th executive board meeting of just this past April.
At this moment, I would like to take a quote from UNESCO’s 199th executive board meeting of just this past April.
“The Executive Board reaffirms that the two concerned sites located in Al-Khalīl/Hebron and in Bethlehem are an integral part of Palestine.”
So never mind the fact that the name “Palestine” of which the United Nations speaks of did not even come into existence until roughly the fifth century B.C.E, over a thousand years after Abraham. You know what is even more ironic? When the Palestinian Authority denies the Jewish connection to Hebron, apparently they keep forgetting that Abraham, who is recognized in Islam as a prophet and a forefather of the Jewish people, is conveniently buried right next to Sarah.
Talk about things that make you go “hmm!”
Unfortunately, this is most certainly not the first time that the world has sought to annihilate Judaism and its legacy from the history books, and it will without a doubt not be the last. It is the job of each and every single one of you to ensure that the legacy which Abraham and Sarah started is never forgotten. There will be times when each and every one of you will feel that the whole world is against you, that the people who you thought you could trust in college turned out to have some of the most sinister intentions. It is at these times more than ever we should remember the sacrifices that Avraham made for the sake of the future of the Jewish people and ensure that his deeds were not in vain.
The Ancient Roman poet Virgil once said, “Nothing shall erase you from the memory of time.” No matter how vigorously the United Nations, the Arab world, or SJP seek to rewrite or otherwise erase Jewish history, the truth will always be on your side. All you have to do is learn how to best use that truth to your advantage. Discover your skills and think about how you can use those skills to fight for Israel. The future of the Jewish state rests on our shoulders.
